It's no secret that the Lions are in need of adding a running back or two this offseason because Kevin Smith is still recovering from multiple injuries, including a torn ACL. Martin Mayhew recently said that the Lions will look to add depth to the running back position either through the draft or free agency, and already the team has made a move via the latter, signing DeDe Dorsey, who passed up offers with the Rams and VIkings to join the Lions.
Dorsey sent a Twitter message Tuesday that read: "I am the newest member of...The Detroit Lions. Motown here I come! I can't wait to get out there and do my thing! Back to the Jungle...I was a Lindenwood Lion in College and now I am a Detroit Lion in the NFL...makes sense."
Dorsey spent the 2009 season playing in the UFL after being released by the Bengals following the team's first game. He had success in the UFL with the Las Vegas Locomotives, taking home MVP honors in the league's championship game. In Las Vegas he was teammates with Jake Nordin, who signed with the Lions after the Locomotives won the UFL championship.
Dorsey is likely only the first of a couple new running backs to join the team this offseason. I wouldn't be surprised if the Lions added more depth to the position via the draft in April. If C.J. Spiller goes off at the combine, there's always a chance his stock could drastically jump and the Lions could consider selecting him in the first round. Even if that doesn't happen, my guess is the Lions will be taking some serious looks at backs later on in the draft as well as when free agency gets underway. Regardless of what the timetable is for Smith to return from his injury, the uncertainty that comes along with it is enough that the Lions need to have a couple backup plans in case he isn't ready come September.
